Rolls-Royce In China

Rolls-Royce has been operating in China for more than 50 years and employs more than 2,000 people across the country.
The rapid growth of China's civilian aviation sector and energy sector make the region a key investment target for the company, and its aircraft engine division now supplies every major Chinese airline.
According to the company's website, 370 aircraft in China operate using Rolls Royce engines and a further 166 aircraft are on order.
The company is also key to China's rapid energy sector expansion because it supplies gas turbines to support gas pipeline infrastructure across China.
Two of China's biggest energy companies, CNOOC and COSCO are among Rolls Royce's clients.
A key contract won by Rolls Royce was the "West to East Pipeline Project" - the longest gas pipeline in the world which will transport 47 billion cubic metres of natural gas every year through 12,000km of pipeline.
The Serious Fraud Office investigation is likely to be complex. Corruption is a serious problem in China.
The issue will be complicated further because gifts are expected to accompany any Chinese business transaction - and large business deals could mean large gifts.
Adopting a "when in China" attitude by giving large gifts can help to put western companies on a level playing field with Asian competitors.
The problem is that a gift in China is a bribe in the West.
